SEGi University recently held an Oath Taking & Appreciation Ceremony for Peer Counsellors, an event that recognised the contribution of former peer counsellors while welcoming newly elected peer counsellors. Held on the 31st of March 2023 at Auditorium A, the event was graced by Alice and Hana, registered counsellors of SEGi University.
Peer counsellors are a group of selected students trained with basic counselling skills to offer support and guidance to their peers who may be struggling with emotional distress, loneliness, anxiety, depression, and other personal issues. They maintain a positive attitude and non-judgmental listening skills, which are crucial in addressing the mental health challenges of university students.
According to a study by the Malaysian Ministry of Health, the prevalence of mental health disorders among university students has increased over the years, with depression and anxiety being the most common disorders. The study revealed that around 11.2% of university students in Malaysia suffer from depression, while 18.3% suffer from anxiety. The study further highlighted that only 1 in 5 students seek help from a mental health professional.
