In a significant initiative, 13 Year 5 BDS students embarked on a Community Oral Health (COH) posting in Pahang from the 23rd to the 27th of October 2023. The objective of this posting was to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the structure, organization, implementation, and resource management of the health and oral health delivery system in Malaysia, specifically at the state and district levels.
Throughout the posting, students actively engaged in various aspects of community oral health, working closely with healthcare professionals in Pahang. The hands-on experience aimed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application.
The COH posting provided a platform for students to witness the intricacies of the healthcare system, observe the challenges faced at different levels, and understand the collaborative efforts required to ensure effective health service delivery. By immersing themselves in the local context, students gained valuable insights into the unique dynamics of Pahang’s oral health landscape.
The posting included visits to healthcare facilities, interaction with community members, and participation in health outreach programs. These experiences not only broadened the students’ perspectives but also deepened their appreciation for the diverse factors influencing oral health in different regions.
At the end of the posting, students were expected to comprehend and articulate the overarching objectives. This transformative learning experience is poised to contribute significantly to the students’ professional development, fostering a sense of responsibility, empathy, and a holistic understanding of oral health practices.
Initiatives like the COH posting in Pahang underscore the commitment of the Ministry of Health and the Faculty of Dentistry to provide students with well-rounded and practical learning opportunities, preparing them to become competent and compassionate dental professionals.
