On a bright Saturday morning, the Faculty of Optometry and Vision Sciences (FoOVS) at SEGi University took a significant step towards fostering awareness and education regarding stroke and its impact on vision. The event, titled “Stroke Survivor and Healthcare Professionals Group Discussion 2023,” unfolded on the 14th of October, providing a platform for healthcare professionals, stroke survivors, and academic experts to share insights and experiences.
The event witnessed active participation from eight healthcare professionals representing various disciplines, including optometrists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, and nurses. These dedicated professionals hailed from esteemed institutions such as the RESQ Stroke Emergency Unit, Neurology Department, Rehabilitation Department, and Geriatric Department of Hospital Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah UPM, Hospital Canselor Tuanku Mukhriz UKM, Pusat Perubatan Universiti Malaya, and the Ministry of Health Malaysia.
In a remarkable display of collaboration, stroke survivors from the National Stroke Association of Malaysia (NASAM) also joined the program, adding a crucial perspective to the discussions.
The crowd had the privilege of hearing from distinguished speakers, namely Prof Azrin E Ariffin from FoOVS and Dr Azuwan Musa from the International Islamic University Malaysia. Both experts delivered impactful speeches elucidating the intricate connection between stroke and vision, providing valuable insights for both healthcare professionals and stroke survivors.
The event, held at SEGi University Lobby in Kota Damansara from 10 am to 12 pm, successfully achieved its objectives of raising awareness and fostering potential collaborations. By bringing together healthcare professionals, stroke survivors, and academic experts, the initiative aimed to create a more informed and supportive environment for stroke patients on their journey to recovery. This event stands as a testament to SEGi University’s commitment to community engagement and healthcare advocacy.
