In a strategic move towards enriching the academic and practical experiences of future dental professionals, 13 Year 5 BDS students from the Faculty of Dentistry recently embarked on a transformative Community Oral Health (COH) posting in Perak. This insightful posting, spanning from October 23rd to October 27th, 2023, aimed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the intricacies of health and oral health delivery systems at both the state and district levels in Malaysia.
The primary objective of this posting was to familiarize students with the structure, organization, and implementation of health and oral health delivery systems. By immersing themselves in the day-to-day operations, students gained firsthand insights into the organizational dynamics crucial for effective healthcare delivery.
Throughout the posting, students actively participated in ward rounds, closely observing and recording complex cases. The hands-on experience allowed them to connect theoretical knowledge with real-world scenarios, fostering a holistic understanding of their future profession.
The picturesque landscapes of Perak set the backdrop for this transformative experience. Commencing daily at 8.00 am and concluding at 5.00 pm, students engaged with healthcare professionals and administrative staff, broadening their perspectives on the challenges and triumphs within the healthcare sector.
As the students conclude their COH posting, they are expected to not only grasp the structural intricacies of health systems but also appreciate the collaborative efforts required for effective oral health delivery. This initiative, facilitated by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Faculty of Dentistry, aligns with SEGi University’s commitment to providing holistic educational experiences that prepare students for the dynamic landscape of healthcare.
