SEGi welcomed a powerful dose of media realism through the Current Trends in Journalism seminar on 5 March 2025. Organised by the Student Experience Office in collaboration with the School of Communication & Creative Design, the event featured Datuk Yong Soo Heong, President of the Malaysian Press Institute, who delivered a hard-hitting yet inspiring session on the evolving landscape of journalism and communication careers. The intimate group of 12 attendees were immersed in the truth behind headlines — the purpose, pressure, and passion that drive today’s media professionals.
The seminar unpacked a wide range of topics, from the motivations behind entering journalism to the realities of surviving and thriving in today’s volatile media environment. As digital transformation accelerates, many media professionals are expected to multi-task, adapt rapidly, and move beyond traditional job boundaries — from reporters and presenters to strategic communicators and MCs. According to UNESCO, journalism remains one of the most high-risk yet vital professions, with over 70 journalists killed worldwide in 2022 and many more facing threats to press freedom and safety.
